sweet changes

I'm already anticipating the snowshoeing through the maple stand, the steamy sugarhouse in march, the sweet taste of our own syrup... and it's only December 1! We're all busy helping turn this once shed-then chicken coop-then garage into our new sugarhouse.

Handmade Holiday

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! I'm headed off to work but thought I'd post a few recent finds that I might use this holiday season.

I love this one as a gift for the grandparents and would probably make it with a homemade "clay" recipe.
I'm always carrying my coffee in mason jars--thought this would be a great idea to keep it hot longer. Could also be a great gift--a jar filled with coffee and this knitted jar-cozy.

A fun idea for kids--my boys would love this magnetic "puzzle"!

And this decorating idea--we don't do a lot of decorating for the holidays but we do always have candles or oil lamps going at dinner time. These look lovely (and easy!)

Bird-in-Hand

I never posted about our quick get-away to Pennsylvania in September. We attended a wedding in Connecticut and decided to visit one of Adam's favorite places while we were headed south--Bird-in-Hand, PA.
It was a beautiful time to visit.

A quick and easy gift--covered button bookmarks. I love searching through my fabric scraps for covered button material. With a little glue and some jumbo paper clips, it's a simple stocking stuffer for kids or adults.

*the love of bare november days*

It is hard to believe it was just two months ago that our farm looked like this. Winter comes so fast. The trees are bare, the garden is resting, the farm has changed its colors.
But we welcome it.

Handmade Holiday

I've been enjoying making an assortment of baby/kid hats with Peace Fleece yarns. The colors are beautiful and the wool is thick and soft. It's great to have a stash of hats for gift-giving after the holidays, too--for new babies and birthdays.

Handmade Holiday

I'm joining Plain and Joyful Living's Handmade Holiday (a day late...) I am calling these "Aunt Elizabeth's Gift Sets" in honor of my great aunt--who loved to knit washcloths, would have loved these glass jars and would have appreciated a good old fashioned bar of soap. :) I'll be gifting some of these, but also selling some at our local craft fairs and on etsy.

Babies

Late last week, our sow had piglets. We took the kids out to the barn in their pj's to see the piglets being born. One little piglet was crawling around in the hay. The 13 others were born later during the night.

The next morning, we got an early call from the post office saying our chicks had arrived. They are mostly meat birds, with one "free rare breed" (which was a Brahmas hen last time) and one aruacana (K's anxious to have colored eggs!) My parents happened to be in town for a few days and got to enjoy all the baby farm animal action.
