these days

m's falcons

First, I'm so excited to announce the arrival of our first niece (after 6 nephews)!  My sister (who just flew with my nephew a couple weeks ago to visit) had a baby girl on Thursday night about 3.5 weeks early.  Everyone is doing really well and little Estella went home just in time to be snug at home before the snowstorm hit Chicago.

These bitter snowy days have meant a lot of time inside...
working on our bird studies
knitting, reading, rocking
and even time inside for the littlest animals in the farm.

I've also started another online college course to slowly finish up my prerequisites for becoming a lactation consultant.  Which means many more nights like this.

Hope everyone is staying warm!

for the fort

I thought the boys needed some cushions for their new fort.  I found some sale outdoor fabric at Joann's (our only local source for fabrics)--same pattern in three different colors, which also happened to be their favorites.  They carry outdoor foam as well...not cheap, that's for sure, but the boys seem to like them a lot and K even helped me sew them!

And our little farmgirl is 4 months old today--I want to stop time right now...we are loving every minute with her!

pig pile

I didn't intend to have this blog so silent this week,
but with a persistent illness still lingering,
new glasses (constantly requiring trips to the "big city" 25 min away for adjusting)
and the other spring busy-ness,
it's been a bit hard to keep up.

This morning, one of our sows had 19 piglets (19!?!)! Make that 20! One was born as I was typing this!
17 18 little piglets are trying to nurse away right now in the barn.
It's very unlikely that they will all live
but we are enjoying silent moments of awe
watching these sweet little babies snuggle close.

21 January 2013

My sweet friends had a little get together for me.  Delicious food, crafting and sewing,
and lots of good conversation.  I've actually never had a baby shower or blessingway with any of
my babies, so this was extra special.

the last few weeks

I've been neglecting the blog a bit...
and neglecting a lot of things, actually.
It's the last few weeks of my pregnancy and I've been wanting to just
stay home
snuggle my boys
and let go of all of the distracting tasks that pull me off the farm.

This is the first January that I have not taken the boys to Michigan to visit my family.
As much as we miss seeing everyone, it's been much less stressful to just stay put...
we're prepping the house for baby4, creatively rearranging things in our small home and anxiously anticipating the arrival of our new washer (ours broke a week ago).

19 November 2012

A busy week on the farm!
11 piglets... This sow is such a good mama, she keeps pushing them under the heat lamp
to stay nice and warm.
And our milk cow, Abby, had a baby heifer!

seven things

Both Kim and Tonya shared what they are grateful for today, so I thought I'd join in...

~rain.  very thankful we've had showers off and on over the past few days.

~our garden.  we've been enjoying all homegrown meals many nights this past week.

~slow mornings.  the pace seems to have slowed this week for us, and the boys and i are
enjoying a slow morning today.

~family.  my sister-in-law and nephew travel to michigan today.  and we'll be joining them
in a few weeks.

~my washer.  i'm so thankful for my washing machine on these sandy swimming lesson days!

~flowers.  i can't get enough!  i love the rainbow of colors blooming outside.

~little blessings.  we will be welcoming a new little one into our family in january,
and we are so very excited!

one year ago

Sometimes I like to peek back at our photos from this day a year ago and see what was going on...
Last year ~
I had a dirty little farmboy on my hands,
my first very large soap order going out,
and freshly picked chamomile drying.

30 May 2012

It's that time of year...the busy season creeps up on us.
And, all-of-the-sudden, we are struggling to catch up.
I had good intentions of posting on the blog yesterday.  But,
we raced a storm--getting tools under cover and baby chicks rounded up.
And then, piglets. 11 of them.

I love this time of year, but not the feeling of being so behind.
Tomorrow is a new day-right? :)

In non-farm news, we welcomed this adorable guy to our family!
Welcome Hendrik and many congrats to my sister and brother-in-law!

around the farm

Do any of you miss Farmama's blog as much as I do?
One thing I miss the most are Sara's "around the farm" posts.

around our farm this week~
signage out for summer
elderberries to plant
leaves coming (soon!)
lots of "hee-ya" play (our little micah loves horses!)
 bunnies on pasture
and baby chicks

What's going on around your farm, garden or homestead?
